Scene from WIP I've been struggling with...

As twilight deepens to indigo, the rain begins, further obscuring any signs of familiar landscape.  She shakes her head, remembering the stories of lost travelers, and curses herself for a thousand kinds of fool.  Find the ravine and head north, she mutters, you know the way, you have traveled it before.  Ah, but it wasn’t dark and you weren’t injured then, a voice whispers in her ear.  She turns toward the voice, but she is alone.  She hears faint laughter at a distance, carried away on the wind.

Ensouled

This was written a few years ago when I was a member of an on-line gaming community.  The names and locations reflect those in the game...

Dusk.  The first star appears in a sky rapidly deepening from silver to indigo.  The roaring fire does little to warm the cold that has settled in over the centuries of existence.  I’m hungry, she thinks, staring in to the night sky, the last vestiges of daylight in hurried retreat.  A lone bat flies overhead, searching for its mate, its next meal perhaps.
